Artists’ passionate about textile heritage in Roubaix

Non-Lieu is an artist-led space, with studios based in Roubaix – sister city with Bradford. Roubaix was formerly a textile industry area – and Non-Lieu, meaning Non Place, is a dis-used textile mill taken over by the group of artists after it was abandoned. The artists group have lavished TLC on the space – which is gradually deteriorating and have created a unique environment

When we visited on East Street Arts Study Tour (see Nov posts), director Olivier Muzellec spoke passionately showing his sense of anger about the decline of the area and of its textile industry. He feels that not enough significance is given to the area and explained that much heritage has been lost. He and his fellow artists at Non-Lieu have made it their business to collect up many objects and machinery over the years. The images seen show an installation of this collection occupying the whole two-storey building.
