As part of the preparation for the workshop Sue (Ball) contributed her research and reading around social capital and networks (Sabatini and EP Thompson).
Having been involved in facilitating the development of various networks over the last few years, I was very interested in the notion that a network is stronger when it’s made up of diverse people, i.e. when it’s not a homogenous group.
This relates to ideas about networks, which posit that networks can be about bonding together and bridging outwards – both have their value. But a network that bridges outwards is more resilient. This thinking has informed how I conceptualise the professional networks I’m involved in.
